It represents a 'What-If' scenario and many of the mecha designs are loosely based on UC suits. Although the Gundam has many different universes they all share the same fate and that is they are all on the brink of war, and in some Gundam series they actually have large full scale wars that kill millions of people. The only change is cosmetic - as certain missions take place in jungle, while others in barren wastelands. As a whole if you compare G Gundam to Gundam Wing there are a lot of similiarities, such as in the movie Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz they get the point across that if Earth doesn't stop warring then we are going to have a serious problem on our hands. About the only time the game runs decently is when the environments lack detail of any kind - trees, buildings and rivers.
